Acclaimed dancer/choreographer Francesca Harper will perform her solo dance/theater work, 'The Look of Feeling,' a tribute to her mother, American dance pioneer Denise Jefferson, November 16, 7:30 PM, at Steps on Broadway. The very personal work will be narrated by Hope Clarke, noted dancer/actress/Broadway and film performer, Outer Circle Critics Award and Tony Award winner. Harper recounts her family's flight from Coffeeville, Mississippi, to her mother's legacy as founding Director of The Ailey School at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and a major figure on the New York dance scene. Joffrey Ballet School, a world-renowned dance center offering the most versatile and highest quality training, announces the formation of a brand new performance group for teens. Co-directed by Jo Matos, Joffrey School's Children and Youth Ballet Director, and Irene Hogarth-Cimino, JBS Instructor, auditions will be held on October 24, 2014 at the Joffrey Ballet School. Jersey City resident Samuel Pott's Nimbus Dance Works will celebrate its Tenth Anniversary Season on November 8 at 7PM with a benefit performance at the Barrow Mansion, located at 83 Wayne Street in Historic Downtown Jersey City. This performance will include some of its most beloved repertory works, including Memo, and Surface Tension. Also being performed is an excerpt from a provocative new work being premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 8 & 9, 2015. Tickets are $65 and will include a pre and post-show reception, silent auction and a live auction. The Star-Ledger said “Nimbus Dance Works helps define the American Experience”. All monies raised will help Nimbus continue its mission of bringing people and dance together in an innovative way. (more...)

One of the nation's premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies, New York's Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, will perform 'The Soul of Flamenco' for a single night at The Alden in McLean. The show will be presented at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. Tickets are $30, $20 for McLean tax district residents. Oregon Ballet Theatre provided no shortage of memorable moments throughout Saturday evening's performance of OBT 25 at the Keller Auditorium. With appearances by supporters and dancers from the Ballet's first 25 years, excerpts of work from Trey McIntyre, Christopher Stowell, and founding Artistic Director James Canfield, as well as an iconic Balanchine ballet and a fun-filled 40 minute premiere from Nicolo Fonte that paired 18 dancers with Portland's beloved Pink Martini, it was a big evening. Many stand-out moments were provided by Martina Chavez, a dancer with the company since 2006, who performed leading roles in both Balanchine's Agon and Fonte's Never Stop Falling (In Love). During his speech at the celebration following the performance, Artistic Director Kevin Irving announced that these performances earned Chavez a promotion to the rank of Soloist. Characteristically humble, Chavez said the following day, 'I am so grateful for the opportunities Kevin has given me and I'm excited to continue to learn and grow as an artist with OBT'. (more...)
